A weekend camping with the kids and a Google mishap had me a little
stressed this morning. I tried not to think about it too much while I
was off camping with my children but I admit, late at night, with just
me and the racoons awake, I had haunting thoughts about the contest and
my position.

Ok, enough fluff on the front page.

I see my position slipping to the new guy and so it's time to get down to business.

I'm going to write a series of SEO tips This will be part 1 of the series.

1. Pick your topic and then choose and buy a domain name with at least 1 or 2 keywords or a key phrase in the name. Even if you don't use Godaddy, they have a nice feature wheGodaddyng for a domain name and that is the domain suggestions. Honestly, I've never found one of their suggestions of much value other than to spark ideas for a name that works.

2 Take advantage of free hosting. I'm not talking about forever here but start your SEO long before you're finished your site. Why pay good money to host a site that has no traffic?


3. Feed the spiders! You don't need a 1000 page website to get indexed - just a landing page and some text that has something to do with your chosen topic. It doesn't have to be well written or even very useful as long as it's on topic and has a few good keywords in it. You're feeding spiders at this point, not real visitors so appearance is not your first priority - you can spruce up the place while you're waiting to get indexed.

All my fellow contest participants! This is for all the
Ambatchdotcom Contest entrants. I am developing a SeoContest 12 Step
program for those of you, who are like me, afflicted with ASOCD
(ambatchdotcom seocontest obsessive compulsive disorder).

I love to mix things up, rearrange the furniture, change my hair, do
things a little on the dangerous side. Maybe it's the adrenaline rush
you get from being on edge. Maybe it's the shock value - don't know.
Don't really care to analyise on this particular occasion (although it
is one of my favorite passtimes!)

In this case I'm planning a big change to this site in hopes of knocking Age Magician out of the number 1 spot.

I
know what I want to do - I'm working on the implimentation and I could
do it tonight if I wanted to but the timing is getting me a little
anxious.

This Ambatchdotcom Seocontest Contest entry is doing well. Number 2 and that ain't too shabby! (I never say ain't - not sure why I am now!)

The
question is timing. If I do it now and I'm wrong and drop off the
rankings then I still have time to correct my error and climb up again
before the end of this round.

If I do it now and I'm right then
great - but what if it's only a temporary boost that lasts a few
days??? (Then I've wasted the effort as far as boosting my position -
in other words, I could save it until near contest end or for if I drop
out of the top 3)

Of course, I could be totally wrong about my
plan and it could have absoloutly no effect whatsoever and all this
anxiety could be for nothing.

The only thing I know for sure - Pay attention Age Magician (I know you're reading) you can't do it!

Well,
I'll go back to planning and thinking - and maybe a little more
research to see if the SEO community has anything to say about my ideas.

I've got time... I've got all the way to October if I want to wait that long. But patience isn't one of my virtues.

Maybe it's just me but the last couple of days have seemed a little slow in ambatchdotcom seocontest
country. The top three seem to be stuck and while I'm happy to be
'stuck' in the number 2 spot, I'm getting a little tired of the view
when I look up.

No offence to age magician but it would be nice to see him try out a few other positions for a while!

I
suppose the other positions are moving a bit - I haven't really kept
track too much of the 4th to 10th spots but it doees seem that there
has been some movement there.

I'm also waiting to see if some of
my on site and off site optomization will have any effect on the serps.
(actually kind of holding my breath a bit to see if there is a negative
impact!)

In the mean time I've presented a few logos for the
ambatch logo contest and have been working on my other sites and other
logo competitions as well.

So, that's it. Nothing much new.

Ambatchdotcom Seocontest Ranking Update

Well, the glory was short lived. I don't think my first place position for ambatchdotcom seocontest
even lasted a whole 24 hours before Age Magician's entry slid back into
the number 1 spot and bumped me back into second position.

So,
given that I seem to be "this close" to geting the top spot, I made a
few changes and we will see in a few days if they have been positive or
if they have a negative impact on the rankings.

Today I'm happily reporting that this site has moved into the number 1 position for the search term 'ambatchdotcom seocontest' out of 522000 results. Congratulations Ambatch at reaching the half million mark!

This
leaves Age Magician's entry in the number 2 position and Amit Patel's
entry in number 3. Not a giant shake up in the top 3 spots but I'll
take it.

The top 10 seems to have juggled a tad. Other notables in the top ten are my fellow Canadian with his .ca entry in the number 5 position and the viralinstigator entry hanging around in the number 7 spot.

On a side note, I am working on my about me page and adding irrelevant details daily.
